I've also lead in-service workshops and taught graduate level courses for teachers throughout Vermont in literacy and writing instruction. I'm available for summer workshops, fall in-service presentations, classroom mentoring, and educational consulting throughout the year. Having taught for 25 years in the high school classroom, including mentoring a dozen student teachers, I know what it's like to labor in the trenches. My specialties include engaging reluctant learners as well as giving teachers the confidence to work with students on their writing as well as to see themselves as writers.
As an author of writing for children and young adults, I'm
delighted to talk to students about creative writing, essay writing, and what
it's like to work as a writer. I've addressed classes up to ninth grade about my writing,
especially my books The Black Bonnet, Father By Blood,
and
Two Tracks in the Snow. I love it when I get young writers
excited about a story and when I ask, "Who needs more time?" all hands go up.
Email me for details on school visits.
I give half-day and full-day writing workshops and can be available for a full
week of writing activities either for students or teachers. As a member of the
New England Young Writers Conference at Bread Loaf and a fellow with the
National Writing Project in Vermont, I have
taught workshops in writing instruction for students and teachers throughout
Vermont and New York and regularly teach creative writing, both fiction and
nonfiction, through the University of Vermont.
